Library Technician

I.  INTRODUCTION

This position is located in the MWR Community Recreation Division, Library aboard Naval Station Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. This position is to assist the Librarian running of a successful Library program.

II. MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The incumbent is responsible for all technical service operations of the Library. They will independently perform acquisition duties. They will prepare, verify, and process all procurement purchase requests. Collect bibliographic data for ordering library materials. Will renew subscriptions, monitor receipts of all items purchased and follow up on outstanding orders. Will recommend titles for possible inclusion into collections. Perform copy cataloging to meet specific library requirements. Use automated cataloging resources to obtain and modify record for new material. Maintain name, series, and subject authority control records. Assist in annual inventory of library materials. Use established procedures to prepare material for disposal. Assist in providing ready reference services and use of library equipment to patrons. Refers difficult reference questions to Senior Technician or Librarian. Perform routine clerical tasks. Use varied and advanced functions or word processing software to prepare, format, modify, edit, and print a variety of letters, reports, memos, and other documents.

III. OTHER REQUIREMENTS

Must have 1 year of specialized experience in a library that provided specific knowledge about library rules, policies and procedures for circulation and technical services. Must be able to read, write, and speak English. Must have experience or training that demonstrates the ability to perform computer data processing. Work requires some physical exertion such as long periods of standing. Must be able to frequently lift boxes weighing up to 40lbs.

EVALUATION: Candidates will be evaluated on quality and nature of the experience pertinent to the position.  Application must show sufficient knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the full range of duties of the Library Technician. 

This position may require the incumbent to drive a vehicle around the installation.  A valid driver’s license is required at the time of hire.
